As technology advances, the age range of media usage is getting lower. As devices and technology become more and more accessible, there is a growing concern about the negative impact of children’s exposure to multimedia content.

Accordingly, we propose a smartphone service that combines educational contents and games. Through each stage of the game, children naturally develop a better understanding of the body’s digestive system.

Challenge

In today’s society where the age range of media usage is getting lower,
how should digital devices be used for children?

Design Process

Research

Desk Research

The use of digital devices is increasing rapidly, and smartphones are the media that children can easily access.
There are more and more children who own smartphones. The biggest reason why parents buy smartphones is because of children’s safety and a sense of belonging among peers despite parents’ concerns about the usage of smartphones.

Target User Research

Children usually use games and video media on their smartphones,
which can be interpreted as mainly consuming fun-oriented content.
Findings

What we learned?

The use of digital devices will
increase and the age of media
usage will decrease.

Smartphones are becoming a
necessity for children, but parents
are worried about misusing them.

Children usually use
entertainment content on their
smartphones.

Insights

1

Present a positive model for
children’s use of digital devices.

2

Reduce parental concerns about
children’s use of smartphones.

3

Utilize the playfulness of the
media and the immersion time
of children into education

Everybody Into the Body

Now, you are the strongest and bravest pill on Earth. Use your amazing power to explore the body of a friend, more complex than any maze, and defeat harmful germs and obstacles. Your one tiny objective? Save your sick friend!

Map

Maps are organized in the order of the digestive system. Each map must have at least a base score to open the next locked map.

Character

The character is composed of body, arm, and leg parts. Players can select each part to create their own character. The strength and speed of the character vary depending on the coupling of the part. Locked parts can be purchased with coins(pills) obtained during the game.

Tutorial

Before starting the game, a brief description of the digestive system and tutorials on how to play the game are provided. This tutorial can be viewed again at any time during the game.

Mouth

On this map, a player should distinguish between food and obstruction that enter your mouth and only eat food that your body can digest.

Chew the food passing through the mouth and deliver it to the esophagus! Once the food passes, click on the ‘BITE’ button on the right and chew it finely. You have to distinguish between food and obstruction. If you eat obstructions, HP will be reduced.

Esophagus

On this map, a player have to distinguish between food and obstruction and only pick out what we can eat.

Obstacles, food, and air come down. Use the left and right buttons to select the food exactly and deliver it to the stomach.

Stomach

In this map, a player should avoid highly acidic gastric acid until all food is decomposed.

The stomach acid is secreted to digest food that is full of stomach. However, since the stomach acid in our body is very acidic, a player should use the left and right keys to avoid gastric acid rain until the food is completely digested.

Duodenum

In this map, a player decomposes the food using the correct digestive enzyme depending on the type of nutrient.

Blocks of different colors mean different kinds of nutrients, and beads mean digestive enzymes. Use beads of the same color to break down nutrients.

Small Intestine

On this map, a player clicks on nutrients that pass over the villus to absorb enough nutrients.

In order to fully absorb the nutrients, a player have to separate the bacteria and nutrients that come down and click according to the rhythm.

Large Intestine

On this map, a player must absorb the moisture from the feces as they pass through the colon.

While passing through the colon, the amount of water in the feces should be adjusted using the directional key. As you get close to the ‘water absorption zone’, the feces become thicker and harder as the absorption of water from the feces.

Rectum

This map is a bonus map that allows players to collect additional coins and items while flying towards the anus.

This is a bonus map to collect enough coins before reaching the final map. The handle should be turned left and right to collect the coins and fly towards the light.

Anus

In this map, a player must create the same poop shape as the given poop with proper control of the sphincter.

Depending on the concentration of poop, three colors of poop are given. The thicker the concentration, the easier it is. Adjust the sphincter to form the same shape as the poop presented.

Feedback Session

After proposing “Everybody Into the Body” application of the first concept,  we received feedback from the professor and potential target users.  Most of them thought the concept was appropriate for the theme of educational games for children,  but they gave feedback that there were some inconveniences as follows.

1) The mix of horizontal and vertical mode games is confusing.
2) The graphic design seems to target only children.
3) The color and design of realistic organs make it unpleasant.

After gathering feedback, we decided to develop this project with a more trendy design, while maintaining the game method of Concept 1,  and suggested the second design concept as follows.
